The BBMP is making progress in the road development projects taken up earlier, says Leena Mudbidri

The planned road widening projects undertaken by Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) in different parts of the city, which encountered road blocks due to land acquisition hassles, are well on their way towards speedy progress. Though there were delays in shifting of electric poles and pipelines, this has been solved and work is gathering pace.

Hosur Road, Bellary Road and Tumkur Road have experienced most of the road development projects being three of the major roads having highest traffic density. Before the city grew exponentially, these three roads were on the outskirts leading out of Bangalore. Hosur Road

This major road connects the central business district (CBD) with the south of the city as well as Hosur in Tamil Nadu. With Koramangala and Electronics City in the southern part of the city emerging as software and biotech hubs, Hosur Road is a vital arterial road linking this zone to the heart of the city.

According to H Ravindra, Chairman, Major Works Committee, BBMP, acquiring land from private parties as well as from the army was one of the prime reasons for the sporadic progress in the works on the four kilometre Hosur Road stretch from Vellara Junction to Central Silk Board. "With more land owners accepting the TDR (Transfer of Development Rights), there has been considerable progress on the road widening works on this stretch," says Ravindra, who personally supervised the TDR process.

"Wherever property is available we have made steady progress," points out K T Nagaraja, Superintending Engineer, BBMP. "However, at Adugodi Junction, 42 property owners are unwilling to accept the TDR and hence we have sent the proposal to the governing council," he adds.

With shifting of civic utilities taking place simultaneously, work on this route is scheduled for completion by October 2011.

Tumkur Road

West Bangalore is currently under the spotlight with several road projects being planned to ease the traffic congestion. A new underpass below the Yeshwantpur flyover near the police station, a new ramp and wider road from Tumkur Road side to streamline traffic flow to Yeshwantpur are some of the ongoing projects.

The Circle Maramma Temple junction will also get a new underpass to connect to the one coming up at the C N Rao Circle. "Tendering for these works is in progress," reveals Ravindra.

Regarding plans on the road linking Yeshwantpur with Yelahanka through the GKVK campus, Nagaraja clarified that only the area along the compound wall of the campus will be acquired and the road will not cut across the campus as earmarked in the Comprehensive Development Plan. "The stretch from M S Palya to Canara Bank Colony in Yelahanka has been completed except for the 12 acres which we require from the campus. Currently, the matter is in the High Court," he adds.

Once this road is completed, it will directly link Yeshwantpur with Bellary Road saving motorists 40 minutes of travel time.

Bellary Road

This major arterial road leading to the international airport has experienced most of the road development works right from being widened to 45 metres spanning a distance of 7.6 km, with a six-lane main carriageway and service roads on either side. Regarding the road widening work on the Cauvery Junction-Mekhri Circle stretch, 80 percent of the compound wall construction work has been completed and will be tentatively completed by October 2011, according to the Superintending Engineer.

"With the consent of the royal family, we have acquired 15 acres of land. We have submitted an interlocutory application and once the Supreme Court gives the clearance we will proceed with the rest of the project," adds Nagaraja.
